US Marine Corps -WWII
Corporal Marshall E. Harris

Marshall Harris a 1943 Floodwood graduate, enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17 and in July 1943 embarked on a 23-month tour of duty in Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima.  He was a bow machine gunner and radio operator on an armored amphibian tank, one of 68 tanks of the Second Armored Amphibian Tank Battalion assigned to lead the first wave of infantry to the beach at Iwo Jima, one of the largest volcanic islands in the Pacific. It was the scene of a major World War II battle.

Marshall Harris is a survivor of that battle and considers it his mission to keep the memory alive. “Although many of my buddies were buried there on that island, those who survived those 36 days will never forget our buddies that didn’t make it.”  Marshall was awarded the Presidential Unit Citations, bronze stars and a victory medal for his war service.  After the war, Marshall made a living in the air conditioning and natural gas field.  He lives in McGregor, MN on Round Lake.

Each person who serves our great country is a hero in our eyes.
